What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is simply the elapsed time between somebody enquiring and you responding. It matters more than almost any other number in local sales because prospects contact several businesses at once, and the one that replies first usually gets to frame the conversation, set expectations, and book the appointment.
Why it is such a strong lever
Two things are happening at the same time. Intent decays: the person who was ready to sort their roof at 8pm is back at work by 10am and the urgency has faded. And competition is live: they submitted three forms, so this is a race you did not know you had entered.
Respond in a minute and you are talking to someone in a buying moment who has not yet spoken to anybody else. Respond tomorrow and you are cold-calling somebody who has already started a relationship elsewhere.
How to measure yours
Take your last twenty enquiries. For each, note the timestamp it arrived and the timestamp of your first genuine attempt to reach them — not an autoresponder. Average the gap. Most owners doing this exercise for the first time are unpleasantly surprised, and a meaningful share discover leads they never contacted at all.
What good looks like
- Under a minute: an automated but personal text referencing their specific enquiry.
- Under five minutes: a real call attempt.
- Multiple attempts: across days, in different channels, until they book or decline.
The honest constraint
If you run the business and do the work, you cannot hit these by hand. That is not a discipline failure, it is arithmetic — you are on a roof. This is the entire reason the first response gets automated, with an AI voice agent for the calls you cannot pick up.
