Straight answers
Is AI actually worth it for a small business?
For a narrow set of jobs, genuinely yes: answering enquiries instantly at any hour, following up more times than a human has patience for, and removing repetitive admin. For anything requiring judgment, relationship, or craft, no — and most of the disappointment around business AI comes from buying it for the second category while being sold on the first.
Where it earns its keep
- Speed. Responding to a lead in under a minute at 9pm. No human operation does this reliably.
- Persistence. A fifth follow-up without awkwardness or fatigue.
- Consistency. Every enquiry qualified with the same questions, every job followed by a review request.
- Volume. Writing and testing twenty ad variations instead of two.
- Admin. The copy-paste between tools that quietly consumes evenings.
Where it does not
- Pricing an unusual job. Get this wrong and you lose money on real work.
- Handling an upset customer. That is a relationship, and delegating it reads as contempt.
- Deciding which jobs to take. That is strategy.
- The actual trade. Nobody is automating a roof.
The realistic version
Most of what gets sold as "AI automation" is ordinary automation with AI applied to the two or three steps that genuinely need language. That is not a criticism — it is why it works. Rule-based systems are predictable, and predictability is what you want running your customer communication.
The failure mode to avoid is automating a broken process. If your workflow is chaos, AI produces chaos faster and with more confidence. Fix the process, then automate it.
Practically, if you are going to adopt one thing, make it instant lead response. It has the shortest path to revenue and the least risk of embarrassing you.
